What is a kundali?
A kundali, or janam kundli, is a map of the sky at the moment you were born. It shows where the Sun, Moon and planets were, seen from your birth place. In English it is called a birth chart.
Vedic astrologers read almost everything from this one chart: your nature, relationships, work, and the timing of big life events.
What you need to make one
- Date of birth.
- Time of birth, as exact as you can. Your lagna changes about every two hours, so time matters.
- Place of birth. This gives the latitude, longitude and time zone.
Not sure of your time? Check your birth certificate or ask your family. Even a close time is better than a guess.
What is inside your kundali
- Lagna (ascendant): the sign rising in the east when you were born. It sets up your 12 houses and says a lot about your body and nature.
- Rashi (Moon sign): the sign the Moon was in. Most Indian rashifal is read by this sign.
- Nakshatra: your birth star. There are 27 nakshatras, and the Moon's nakshatra shapes many readings.
- The 9 grahas: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, each with its sign and house.
- The 12 houses: each house covers an area of life, like the 7th for marriage and the 10th for career.
- Dasha: the Vimshottari dasha system splits life into planet periods. Your current mahadasha and antardasha show which planets are most active now.
How the calculation works
Karmik uses real astronomy. Planet positions come from the Astronomy Engine library, which is tested against NASA JPL data. The positions are then moved to the Vedic (sidereal) zodiac using the Lahiri ayanamsa. This is the standard used by most astrologers in India.
Houses use the whole-sign system. The sign of your lagna is the 1st house, the next sign is the 2nd house, and so on. Dashas follow the Vimshottari system, a 120 year cycle that starts from the Moon's nakshatra at birth.
Birth places work in over 240 countries, so people born outside India get their chart the same way.
